From construction worker to ‘American Idol’ star: Relive Noah Thompson’s ‘Idol’ journey

The landmark 20th season of american idol is filled with up-and-coming artists, including Noah Thompson, who became an instant fan favorite after his memorable Idol hearing.

The Kentucky native and former construction worker, now 20, auditioned for the show with Kameron Marlowe’s “Giving You Up,” which earned recognition from Marlowe and praise from Lionel Richie.

“You have a real life, voice that tells stories,” Richie told her at the time. “It’s believable. I don’t know what you expected… I know you didn’t expect this. That’s why I said it.

Throughout the season, Thompson continued to cover songs such as Cam’s “Burning House”, The SteelDrivers’ “Blue Side Of The Mountain”, and Jason Isbell’s “Cover Me Up”.

Katy Perry once called Thompson “the American dream”, while Luke Bryan later said that Thompson “could win all the competition” after praising the “magical quality” he has “on the way”. [his] voice.”

Later in the season, Thompson revealed that his father influenced him to play guitar and pursue a career in music.

“As a child I was just always around the music, my dad gave me his guitar. Dad showed me the simplest chords and I kind of took off,” Thompson recalled. really being in music was also his dream. That’s kind of the point of my being here, for my dad. I wanted to do it almost for both of us.

He hopes his success on Idol will create a special bond with his 9-month-old son, Walker, whom he shares with longtime girlfriend Angel Dixon.

“[My dad] obviously believes me, but I’ve never believed in myself, so for me to have come this far, it’s definitely a confidence booster. I want it to be something that me and [my son] Walker could also do together,” he added. “I think he’s probably going to have a voice over him, he’s got a hell of a screaming voice for sure.”

After co-worker and friend Arthur signed him up to audition for Idol, Thompson admitted he never thought he would get as far as he did in the competition and is now striving. to obtain the title in the hope of giving his son “a completely different life.”

“Just a few months ago, I could never have imagined pursuing something like this. If it wasn’t for Arthur, I never would have signed up for this show. I never would have had the confidence. It’s pretty cool to know that someone believes in you more than you believe in yourself,” Thompson said.

“I have a baby boy, he just turned 7 months old. I recently became a dad, my baby boy, he is my focus for all of this,” Thompson added. “It drives me crazy that I’m even here, it could give me the opportunity to give my son a whole new life, a better life.”

Thompson also wowed the Idol and America judges with country renditions of pop hits such as Noah Cyrus’ “July”, Rihanna’s “Stay”, Harry Styles’ “Falling”, Ben E’s “Stand By Me” King and “” by John Mayer. Sorrow War.”

The standout Idol contestant credits Chris Stapleton, Kameron Marlowe, John Mayer and Neil Young as musical influences.

“I grew up listening to rock more than anything, but eventually I started to like country music. I love telling musical stories,” Thompson explained.
