Tampa construction worker still waiting for WD ‘nightmare’ to be over

TAMPA, Florida. –When Candido Rodriguez received notice of approval from the Department of Economic Opportunity in March, the Tampa construction worker was confident his year-long wait for benefits was finally over.

“It was my worst nightmare,” Rodriguez said. “I haven’t seen a penny, it’s very annoying.”

The DEO notice released on March 25 revealed in part that Rodriguez is “entitled to receive benefits for the period commencing 3/28/21.”

He went on to say that the evidence “meets the requirements of the law”.

According to the notice, Rodriguez has provided proof that his unemployment was “a direct result of the pandemic” and that under the law he is entitled to pandemic unemployment assistance.

Rodriguez and his wife Nancy attempted to access the benefits on the WD website, but faced a series of setbacks, including identity theft.

“I faxed my documents four times and my W2s and my tax papers,” Rodriguez said. “(DEO) said claim my weeks, and I started claiming my weeks – and nothing, no results.”

Nancy Rodriguez said her husband’s benefits are listed as pending whenever they access his DEO account.

News 6 sent the documents to the DEO’s re-employment team in Tallahassee.

Spokesman Morgan Jones said “the team will take a look and contact” Rodriguez.

“I almost gave up,” Rodriguez said. “I hope we get somewhere with your team and Mike.”

If you have an unemployment problem and think you qualify for benefits, don’t leave the money behind.
